Dental Exams and Cleaning at Collins Road Family Dental

The ADA recommends that patients receive at least a dental cleaning and an exam every 6 months. These routine appointments are preventative and allow the dentist to detect any cavities or gum disease in an earlier stage of the disease process. We may take x-rays during your appointment to help evaluate any other treatment that you may need. If you are at high risk for gum disease or cavities, we may recommend more frequent appointments. In addition, dental cleanings and dental exams may be recommended more often if you have a dental condition such as dry mouth, receding gums or other dental issues.

What Is a Dental Exam?

During the dental exam, we check the health of your gums and take dental x-rays at key stages to assess potential dental problems. Periodic dental x-rays help us to detect dental caries earlier before they can spread or cause dental pain. We may also also take dental x-rays prior to administering dental treatments such as fillings, crowns, root canals, and etc.

We will also use dental exams to assess the health of your teeth. We will check for dental plaque, dental tartar and other dental issues that may affect the health of your teeth and gums.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Dental x-rays are safe when they are used appropriately. We will discuss dental x-ray use with you during dental care appointments. Many insurance policies cover dental x-rays as part of routine dental exams and cleanings.

What is Preventive Dental Care?

Preventive dental care helps you maintain dental health and a bright smile for a lifetime. A dental exam once every six months is the first step to preventive dental care. During dental exams, we perform an extraoral and intraoral cancer screening, check for any pathology, and check for any cavities or bone loss due to periodontal disease.
